PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS SPONSORSHIP (PGP)
Immigration Canada has one of the most open family reunification programs in the whole world. Citizenship and Immigration Canada is committed to joining families together through the Family Sponsorship Canada immigration programs whenever possible, and expedite the processing of sponsorship applications. To qualify for to sponsor parents and grandparents, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident must meet the following requirements and restrictions for sponsorship:
SPONSOR REQUIREMENTS FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS SPONSORSHIP
The Sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident and of minimum 18 years old;
Exceed the minimum necessary income level for PGP program. If married or in a common-law relationship, the income of both persons can be included;
The sponsor and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits the sponsor to provide financial support for the sponsored family member, if necessary. This agreement also mentions that the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support himself or herself. Dependent children under age 19 do not have to sign this agreement;
Sponsor from Quebec must sign an “undertaking” with the province of Quebec, Canada —a contract binding the sponsorship;
Sponsors will have to demonstrate, for a period of 3 consecutive years prior to sponsorship, income greater than the annual minimum Income level mentioned by Citizenship and Immigration Canada;
The sponsor must commit to be responsible for financial support for the sponsored family member for a period of 20 years. This time period begins on the date the sponsored relative becomes a permanent resident.
SPONSOR RESTRICTIONS FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS SPONSORSHIP
Not in receipt of social assistance for a reason other than disability,
Not in default of undertaking, immigration loan or debt, performance bond, family support payments or bankruptcy,
Not under a removal order,
Not convicted of a violent crime, an offence of sexual nature or an offence against a relative that results in bodily harm or an attempt or threat to commit any such offences,
Not detained in a penitentiary, jail, reformatory or prison.

REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS FOR PARENT/GRANDPARENT
Parent/Grandparent must have medical, criminal and background checks
Parents/Grandparents could not apply for social assistance after accepted.
Note: Parents/Grandparents have to count as family members and add to the total family members for calculating minimum fund requirement. Canadian Government benefits like child benefits, OSAP or any other assistance will not count as family income.
